Biotechnology which is a technology based on biology, especially when used in agriculture, food science, and medicine has been considered as an important sector of opportunity by the government of Thailand for decades. The government has recognized the potential value of biotechnology in enhancing the productivity of products, particularly in agriculture and food area, which would lead to developing Thailand's economy. |
| However, the biotechnology industry in Thailand is still very much in its infancy; there are several pipeline products but few have been commercialized. Therefore, the government needed to support research & development programs that would not only improve the quality of human life and but also help reduce the negative effects of chemicals on the environment and on human health. |
| There were initiatives under way to stimulate the creation of a vibrant biotechnology sector in Thailand. Consequently, the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) were established to provide the critical mass needed in order to achieve the goal and attract private investors. |
| The focal point for biotechnology development in Thailand is BIOTEC, which was established under the Ministry for Science, Technology and Energy in 1983. BIOTEC is now under the umbrella of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA). BIOTEC operates autonomously outside the normal framework of civil service and state enterprises, enabling it to more effectively support the development and transfer of biotechnology. Furthermore, BIOTEC plays a vital role in funding research projects related to plant, animal and human biotechnology. |
